Notes on Big Games

Big Games is an essential part of the Jungle Academy model.

It’s a time when all the students can come together at the end of the week, meet each other, socialise, play games and celebrate the end of another learning week.

Our goal is providing fun and unique games for students to enjoy. However, it s not compulsory for students to take part in the games. Some students maybe more comfortable watching and supporting, or socialising with friends from the sidelines.

Another key tenet of Jungle Academy is to nurture confident, young adults who can make good decisions for themselves and who are able to wisely assess the consequences of their choices, both for themselves and their wider network. Students are encouraged to find ways to resolve issues and disputes amongst themselves first, with adult intervention being kept to a minimum. So far, we have found that this approach works well, and disputes needing direct adult intervention are rarely experienced during each cycle. This result can be attributed to the time spent thinking through and implementing carefully considered boundaries, so that all the students can enjoy their Jungle Academy experience.

Given all this, we would like to go over some of the expectations and invisible boundaries while we’re at the field during Big Games.

  • Jungle Academy staff are responsible only for students who are actively taking part in the Big Game activities.

  • Students may walk around the field and and go to the shops, but, how this works will need to be agreed between the parent and child.

  • Just how far each student can walk away from the main Big Games activity, or whether they can visit the shops to purchase items, and what they are purchasing will be an agreement that each parent has with their growing, young adult.

  • Parents are welcome to share any preferences with us, eg my child is not permitted to visit the shops, and we will help reinforce those boundaries.

As our students mature, it makes less sense to impose universal and arbitrary rules upon the whole; this is not what growing up is about.

So, to recap, cus I have a tendency to be verbose: whether your children can free roam during Big Games or visit the shops is entirely up to you as a parent, the Jungle Academy team will be hosting the games only.

Thanks

Richard
