The rapid transformation of Ojochal from a sleepy backwater to a thriving community has been nothing short of remarkable. Families, especially those with children, have flocked to this once-quiet, sleepy village, recognizing its potential as an ideal place to settle and raise families.
We have been privileged to witness this evolution firsthand and feel proud of our contribution in reinventing Ojochal into an educational hub.

The remarkable success of Ojochal can be seen in the multitude of businesses and services that have emerged, catering specifically to the needs of families. From child-friendly services to educational establishments, the village now offers a diverse range of options that enhance the quality of life for all residents. This vibrant atmosphere has truly elevated Ojochal's position as the number one destination for families in the southern zone.
However, amidst this wave of achievement and prosperity, a significant challenge looms on the horizon—Ojochal's own success. The influx of families wishing to make Ojochal their home has created an overwhelming demand for land and housing, leading to an alarming surge in prices. The consequences of this escalating financial burden are far-reaching and palpable.
As operators of the educational establishment Jungle Academy, we have witnessed firsthand the heartbreaking reality faced by many families who can no longer afford to reside in Ojochal, despite their deep desire to do so. The issue of affordability extends beyond housing and extends into the realm of education too. Schooling costs have continued to climb upwards, with some establishments now benchmarking their prices against schools in the United States or Canada. While this approach may be financially lucrative for the schools, it raises important questions about the type of community we want Ojochal to become.
The allure of Costa Rica, and specifically Ojochal, has always been its close connection to nature, the opportunity for families to spend quality time together, and the promise of a simpler, more fulfilling lifestyle. Yet, the reality for many families with children is that they are burdened with hefty monthly bills, additional expenses and financial strains at every turn.
Instead of embracing the tranquility and natural beauty that Ojochal offers, they find themselves constantly juggling financial responsibilities and struggling to make ends meet in a world where the price of everything is rocketing upwards.
This predicament leaves families with limited affordable options when it comes to education.
Local schools may be the most accessible choice, but they may not meet the specific needs or educational standards that families seek. Homeschooling becomes a tempting alternative, but it requires significant time, effort, and not everyone is successful in teaching their own children. Alternative education establishments are now rapidly approaching prices that have home-country parity, and so can quickly deplete savings or further diminish already shrinking incomes.
The future of Ojochal as an attractive and sustainable community hinges on addressing these challenges. It is crucial for stakeholders, community leaders, and residents to recognize the looming problems and find solutions that ensure the affordability of both housing and education.
Building affordable housing and creating sustainable educational models are crucial steps towards preserving Ojochal's appeal as an alternative haven for families.
Ojochal is currently confronted with the stark possibility that only tourists will be able to afford the exorbitant prices we are reaching, leading families, who wish to settle here with the reality of having to relocate elsewhere due to the scarcity of affordable schooling options.
Consequently, the community runs the risk of losing its essence and becoming exclusively just a playground for the affluent.
In light of these very real and pressing circumstances, Jungle Academy has taken proactive steps to explore strategies for freezing or even decreasing our prices. Numerous parents have voiced concerns to us that Ojochal is quickly becoming financially unattainable for families to put down roots in.
At Jungle Academy we want to play our part in making sure price spiraling doesn't create a trend shift, where families, teachers and workers simply can't afford to be here any more.
It would be a real shame if this wonderful experiment in building an ad-hoc, decentralized, horizontal community is thwarted by its own rapid success.
